The impressive tower is at the West of the church and its walls are 6 feet thick. It was built in the late 1470's.
The tower holds lots of symbols on different decorated tiles.Chessboard motifs are around the tower, these used to be the Le Blund coat of arms. Most of the flint that used to make the tiles look prettier are gone now, but at the time they would have looked really nice. One other tile shows the letters 'MR' - which means Mary Regina, another name for the Virgin Mary. Another shows the letters 'IS' - which symbolizes Jesus. Also, there are slots all the way up the tower. Although most people think they are for letting light in to the tower, they are actually there because they were used for holding up scaffolding while the tower was being built. One strange thing about the tower is two heads that are halfway up the tower. Nobody can think of what they might be for or what they do -it is a complete mystery. |
