The war memorial that stands in the churchyard bears the names of the local men who fought and died in the First and Second world wars. There are 45 names in total on the memorial. 31 were lost in World War One; 14 were lost in World War Two. None of these people returned. It stands in honour of the men lost.
An inscription on it says,'To the greater glory of God and in memory of the men of this parish who laid down their lives in the great war 1914-1918. The men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt...they were a wall unto us both by night and day.'
The memorial also particularly intrigued me as it showed the names of 'Herbert F Coe' and 'Arthur W Coe'. Who both shared the same surname as me. I could find very little on these names but I found a small amount. By searching lots of different websites I found one record that related to 'Herbert F Coe'. It said that he lived in Suffolk-which matches-that he fought and died in the First World War, this made me a little more sure. I kept looking and found that they approximated that his birth date was 1875, which means he would have been 39 when World War One started-an age where they were certainly still expected to sign up for war.
I then searched for 'Arthur W Coe' and, despite the fact he was mentioned in quite a few more records, I could find next to nothing about him. It still states that he served in the First World War, but they are not sure of his age. One website I found was not the most helpful, as it did not hold much information, but the concept of it intrigued me. It was a public site where-if you knew anything about someone who fought in the war-you could submit information. It is called 'Lives of the First World War'. I submitted information about this memorial on the website. Hopefully this will help to uncover more about him.
